The cutting of the cake is a big moment at any wedding. All eyes are on the bride and groom, and you can guarantee that there will be plenty of smartphones and cameras capturing that very moment.

As such, only a splendidly-decorated cake that reflects the exquisite surroundings of your private villa on a Thai island will do.

She Sells Seashells

For a delicate, feminine look, we adore the idea of decorating your wedding cake in faux shells and starfish. This kind of cake is perfect if you wanted to stick to an elegant all-white or ivory colour palette, as the fine details of the ocean-themed decorations bring enough design interest to the cake without leaving any need for added colour. Of course, that’s not to say that a colourful starfish or shell cake wouldn’t look great either. Vivid blue frosting could really set off warm, amber starfish and pale pink shells if you’re searching for something a little more vibrant.

Colourful Setting

This fabulous cake was designed by Rachel Skvaril of the Fondant Flinger bakery, based in New Orleans. While this bakery may be a world away from Thailand, we think it would suit the beachy wedding theme in the Land of Smiles perfectly.  The luscious blue ocean waves were created from rolled-out layers of blue fondant, ruffled around the base tier of the cake. The top tier, which resembles the sublime golden sand of a Phuket or Koh Samui beach, was crafted from fine, powdery sugar. We bet it tasted delicious as well, as beneath the ocean icing was a vanilla sponge cake with raspberry buttercream.

Out at Sea

Some couples saying their vows in Thailand choose to treat their guests to post-ceremony drinks on a privately chartered yacht. If this is you, then why not continue the nautical theme with your wedding cake? This elaborate offering from the Sweet Ladies Bakery features a traditional navy and white colour palette, accented with touches of pink and pearls. The fondant ropes and sailor knots add extra detail and design interest, and are sure to wow all of your wedding guests. If you really want to push the boat out, you could even add twin anchors to the top tier of the cake.

Ocean Watercolours

If you fancy something a little more minimal that oozes just as much wow factor as the previous designs, a watercolour cake could be right up your street. Soft, feminine and pretty, this theme is a winner for brides and grooms that don’t want to embellish their cake with all of the whimsical touches that have become so popular at rustic-themed weddings. This minimal two-tier cake was put together by Sydney-based Faye Cahill Cake Design. The two tiers were put together and then painted with food colouring to create the striking ocean watercolour effect.

Under the Surface

Blue is certainly an adventurous choice for the bride and groom that want to break away from tradition on their wedding day. However, if you want to inject some warmer hues into your wedding cake then it’s time to search beneath the waves for a little inspiration. Anyone who has ever gone scuba diving in Thailand will know that just beneath the surface of the water lies a colourful kingdom of coral reefs that are home to an abundance of sea creatures. On this cake, white and scarlet corals and starfish delicately crafted from fondant depict the spectacular underwater world.
