Before the Big Day

When it comes to romantic options for non-traditional couples that want to share the last day and evening before their wedding enjoying each others’ company, Thailand's islands are ready made for special moments.

For some couples in the West, the old adage that it’s bad luck to see each other the night before the wedding, still rings true. However, an increasing number of couples see a destination wedding in tropical locations like Thailand as an opportunity to break free from the shackles of tradition and do things their own way.

Often on a wedding day, the bride and groom are so busy socializing with their guests, they don’t have that much time to enjoy each others’ company. That's why it can be extra sweet to do something together before the festivities begin.

Islands like Phuket and Koh Samui are brimming with choices for romantic activities – below is a full day of memorable moments for pre-wedding couples.

In the Morning

If you want to enjoy a whole day with your loved one before the wedding celebrations kick off, then it makes sense to start with something memorable. In Thailand, a trip to the local temple is always a cultural treat, as you can join locals and visitors to give alms and receive blessings from the Buddhist monks. The monks usually give a blessing, which involves tying a piece of white or red cord around the visitors' wrists, which is meant to bring you health, luck, and prosperity, so leave it on until well after the wedding day.

Lunch with a View

There are few moments more enjoyable as sharing a wonderful meal with your partner. Throw in spectacular ocean views, and you’re in for a date to remember. If you’re tying the knot in Koh Samui, Dr Frog’s Italian Bar & Grill is perched atop a hill in Chaweng Noi and boasts uninterrupted ocean views and a menu featuring delectable Thai and Italian cuisine. If you’re enjoying the delights of Phuket the day before your wedding, Tunk Ka restaurant on Rang Hill in Phuket Town is a smart choice for a romantic meal. Make your way down a stairway lined with trees to reach the restaurant, which also features fabulous views of the island and a scrumptious array of traditional Thai dishes.

Gifted with Love

Treating your partner to a special gift the day before your wedding is one sure way to say ‘I love you’. It’s even better if you splash out on a gift that you can both enjoy together, whether that is an authentic piece of Thai artwork to put up on your wall back home or some “his and hers” perfumes to be worn on the big day. Visitors will find themselves spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping options on Phuket and Koh Samui as each island is home to a choice of shopping centres and department stores. Central shopping malls are among the best in Thailand, and there is one on each of the country's top islands. Central Festival Phuket can be found just outside of Phuket Town, while Central Festival Samui is in the heart of Chaweng.

Out & About

If an afternoon shopping trip with your other half doesn’t tickle your fancy, then perhaps it’s time to make the most of Thailand’s natural treasures. In addition to glowing beaches; Phuket and Koh Samui are home to lush jungles which offer up numerous hiking trails to glorious, hidden waterfalls. On both islands, the waterfalls are a popular spot with locals for a refreshing dip and a family picnic, and there is no reason that you can’t turn your waterfall excursion into a romantic hiking adventure too. On Samui, Namuang One and Two are situated some 12km southeast of Nathon Bay, and offer the chance for a picturesque walk. In Phuket, Bang Pae waterfall in Thalang’s Khao Phra Thaeo National Park is a popular but unspoilt cascade.

The Last Supper

After a day out enjoying the natural attractions of your chosen island destination, it’s worth resting with a relaxing evening in advance of your special day. Head back to your villa for a fresh seafood feast, all prepared by a professional chef in your villa’s very own kitchen. You can either eat your meal on a candlelit table on your villa’s sun terrace overlooking the ocean, or dial up the romance even further by having a table set right on the beach.
