When it comes to planning the perfect wedding day, many couples struggle to select the perfect song for that all important first dance and choosing the right tunes to capture your guests’ hearts can be an even bigger challenge.

If the mind-boggling choice of emotional acoustic numbers and classic power ballads is too much to contemplate without help, why not take some inspiration from stars who have already tied the knot? From sassy R&B smash hits by Beyoncé to meaningful tear-jerkers by Ellie Goulding, selections form the this wedding hit list has been played by big names from politics, music and even Hollywood.

Your Song

Originally recorded by Elton John, Will and Kate (more formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) chose Ellie Goulding’s version of “Your Song” for the first dance at their wedding ceremony in 2011. Elton John originally released this romantic ballad on his second album in 1970, and in1998 it made its way into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Other accolades for “Your Song” also include making it to number 137 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 2004 list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.

You and I

On October 3 1992, America’s first couple danced to Stevie Wonder’s “You and I (We Can Conquer the World)” at their wedding. Written and recorded by the Motown wonder, the song features on Stevie’s 1972 album “Talking Book”. Since it was first recorded, this ballad has been re-released by George Michael, Shirley Bassey and Michael Bublé. Happily, the couple’s love has lasted as long as the legendary song. In 2012, the President himself tweeted, “I married the love of my life and my best friend”, to which his wonderful wife replied, “Thank you for being an incredible partner, friend, and father every day. I love you!” How romantic!

Crazy in Love…

At their 2008 wedding, pop diva Beyoncé and rap star Jay Z were so “Crazy in Love” that they decided to use their very own collaboration as their first dance soundtrack. Released in 2003, “Crazy in Love” was Miss Knowles’ first solo single post-Destiny’s Child, and it soared to the number one spot in VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the 2000s” list. It was also Beyoncé’s first number one hit in the US, and remained at the top spot for eight consecutive weeks. The tune also reached the top ten in Australia, Canada and many European countries. With all that success, perhaps it’s not so surprising the couple wanted to reminisce about their collaborative endeavours on their wedding day.

It Had To Be You

Posh Spice’s wedding to Manchester United legend David Beckham has to be one of the biggest celebrity weddings in recent years. On the big day, the famous couple danced to a live version of the 1920s classic “It Had To Be You” performed by The Starlight Orchestra. Written by Isham Jones in 1924, the song has also featured in famous movies, including “Casablanca” and “When Harry Met Sally”. It has been performed by a multitude of artists over the years, including Barbara Streisland, Billie Holiday and even John Travolta.

The Way You Look Tonight

Sadly, Brad Pitt’s marriage to lovely “Friends” actress Jennifer Aniston did not last. However, no one can deny the classy celebrity splendour of their wedding, which took place on July 29, 2000. Hollywood’s golden couple danced to Frank Sinatra’s version of “The Way You Look Tonight”, a song that was originally performed by Fred Astaire.  The enchanting song won the Academy Award for “Best Original Song” in 1936. As well as this and more classic tunes, the 200 guests at Brad and Jen’s one million dollar wedding also enjoyed lobster, champagne and fireworks.
