Pretty in pink
Vera Wang’s latest bridal collection Debuted earlier this month in New York, V is an explosion of coral, fuchsia and peony hues that is bound to get brides-to-be even more excited about wedding dress shopping.
Despite the reigning popularity of the white wedding dress, brought into style when Queen Victoria wed Prince Albert in 1840, an increasing number of designers are breaking away from the mould.
Perhaps the world’s leading wedding couture designer, Vera Wang, showcased her latest collection Bridal Fashion Week in New York earlier this month, and it was anything but white. A vivid collage of seductive, dreamy and sensual hues – all in the pink family – were paraded down the runway by models who "married" traditionally embellished gowns with cutting edge colours.
Despite the range of new hues, the classic silhouettes in the collection rarely break away from Vera Wang’s signature style. After browsing through the designer’s vivid montage of magentas and peonies, a growing number of brides may be encouraged to break away from traditional white, ivory and champagne when it comes to looking gorgeous their big day.
Peony princess
The classic shape of this mermaid gown is perhaps best viewed from the back, which is decorated with two of the large traditional bows that are so on-trend for bridal couture this season. The floral beaded embroidery of the train is another nod to tradition, while the dramatic peony shade offers the bride an excellent opportunity to make a statement with her dress.
Petal power
The unforgettable silhouette and details of this dress are enhanced by the sensual shade of the petal coloured silk. The ball gown style wedding dress features an elegant hand-draped bodice, emphasised by the large flower detail at the waist, and a striking shoulder strap. While the colour of the dress is certainly a break from tradition, the minute attention to detail in its design and the signature shape of its full, flowing skirt makes it stand out as a bridal classic.
Pretty as a rose
The textured skirt of this strapless silk ball gown combine with the soft rose hue of the material to make this dress a true Vera Wang classic. The gown features a delicate hand appliqué Chantilly lace bodice and a draped skirt that is accentuated by the crystal pleated detail, creating a layered effect. The small grosgrain bows featured on the bodice are yet another nod to one of this season’s biggest bridal gown trends – bows.
The little mermaid
Perhaps one of the most striking gowns in the collection, the coral colour of this wedding dress is anything but traditional. The traditional mermaid gown shape is decorated by delicate faille blossom detail and floral embroidery, which add a softer touch to the overall seductive effect of the figure hugging, bright colour of the dress.
Peony prize
Another peony creation, the voluminous skirt of this strapless ball gown style wedding dress makes it a classic with a punchy, colourful twist. The gown also features open back detail and feminine touches of floral beaded embroidery.
