You need more than perfect hair, makeup and a stunning outfit when it comes to creating the perfect wedding photo.

If you’ve travelled all the way to Thailand for the tropical destination wedding of a friend or loved one, there’s a fairly high chance that you will regularly be uploading holiday snaps to your social media feed to share with everyone back home.

On the day itself, although you will most likely be preened and perfect for all the selfies you plan on taking throughout the day, there is still an art to getting your selfies just right.

Photographers use a number of technical tricks to make sure their subjects look their best and you can do the same to really make those absent friends green with envy.

Below are a few tips on how to make the most of your wedding selfies.

Rule of thirds

If you’re a serial selfie-taker, it’s likely that you’re already well-versed on the rule of thirds. As you smile for the camera, try to make sure your face is positioned in the top-right or top-left hand corner of the frame as opposed to the centre. Try to keep your eye line about one third of the way down the frame and a little bit to the side of the centre. This will ensure you snap a flattering image and avoid having a mug shot that looks unflattering.

Make a Frame

Making a frame within a frame creates a structured, flattering photo. This kind of pose tends to work best if you’re the only person in the shot with your best wedding smile at the ready. Instead of craning your arm and holding the camera or phone with one hand, hold the device with one hand and click to take the photo with the other. If both arms are positioning the camera away from your body, they will act as an additional frame.

Experiment a Little

Practising in the mirror is perhaps the first rule of the good selfie. After all, everyone has a side that’s slightly more attractive to the lens. Start by tilting your head left and right as you look at yourself in the screen of the phone or camera to discover which is your best angle. Like the rule of thirds, a shot taken from a slight angle to the left or right it always more attractive than a centre shot where you’re staring into the lens face-on.

Engage your Audience

If you’re at a lavish wedding in Thailand, then make the most of the fabulous setting to make your friends and family back home jealous. This is particularly easy if you’re at a beach wedding, as you will be able to factor the gorgeous white sand and turquoise-blue waters into the background of your image. It’s also easily achievable if your friends are hosting their wedding at a private villa because there will be plenty of stunning feature backdrops for you to choose from whether you want to show off the landscaped gardens, infinity pool or ocean views – take your pick. 

Check the Lighting

To capture an image that shows you at your best, it’s important to get the lighting right. The magical hour just after sunrise and light an hour before sunset tend to produce the most attractive glows – which is good news if you’re looking for a way to kill time while the bride and groom are taking part in a sunset photo shoot down on the beach. To find the best angle in terms of lighting, hold the camera in front of your face and keep turning 90 degrees until you find the lighting angle that works best.
