Why So White?
While many brides still opt for a traditional white wedding dress, an increasing number are breaking the mould by going for a rainbow of revolutionary hues.
Since it was popularised by Queen Victoria when she wed Prince Albert back in 1840, white has been the go-to colour for the majority of brides tying the knot.
Fresh, bright shades of cream, champagne and ivory have also become reigning bridal champions over the years, but now the shades are changing.
Celebrities including Gwen Stefani and Shenae Grimes have been bold enough to select statement coloured wedding dresses, and a growing number of brides are also surprising their guests with a splash of colour, from vibrant shades of pink to softer hues of minty green and red.
The only question is, with such an array of captivating colours available, what will you go for?
Something Blue
If you are still searching for your ‘something blue’, then you can find it in a remarkable v-neck sleeveless wedding dress by Houghton. Also featuring a detachable tulle skirt, this blue number is ideal as a light and comfortable number to stay cool during your Phuket or Koh Samui wedding ceremony on the beach. The striking blue hue will also bring out the vivid bluey/turquoise of your fantastic ocean backdrop, and could even be the centrepiece of your entire wedding colour palette.
The Little Mermaid
When it comes to wedding dress design Vera Wang is always at the forefront of cutting edge creations, and her Fall 2014 wedding gown collection in particular made a colourful splash. This eye-catching mermaid gown is an ideal choice for the true ‘pink lady’. The coral coloured silk makes a striking change from white, without being an overpowering ‘girly’ hot pink. The faille blossom, pleated organza and floral beaded embroidery add enough delicacy to make this coral-coloured creation an instant hit, both on the runway and the wedding aisle.
Bold Choice
Bolder even than her coral creation is Vera Wang’s burgundy ‘Kaitlin’ strapless ball gown wedding dress. While this rich, deep hue might not scream ‘bride’, the v-neck bodice, criss-cross detailing and iconic ball gown silhouette all make this frock a daring, yet delightful choice. Not for the faint of heart, this bold colour is sure to get the groom’s pulse racing.
Pretty in Purple
If you aren’t ready to take the plunge with something bold, then opt for something gentle like a pretty purple gown from Jenny Packham’s latest bridal collection. Named ‘Utopia’, the gown comprises a delicate pale purple sheath under an intricately embroidered layer of lace. The pale tones of the dress aren’t too overpowering, and the scoop neckline, cap sleeves and stunning beaded embellishment on the belt and neck ensure it is every bit as classic and elegant as the finest of white gowns.
Gold Rush
Why not infuse your wedding with a little extra sparkle by settling on a gold wedding gown? Not only is this regal colour every bit as graceful as champagne or ivory, but it adds an extra ‘wow’ factor that will make your husband’s jaw drop when he sees you make your way down the aisle. Johanna Johnson’s eye-catching ‘Beauville’ strapless dress is luminescent in both its colour and sculpted silhouette. The fitted sweetheart bodice also adds a little something extra for brides in search of a wedding dress that's a little bit sexier than the standard look.
