Bridal Trends on Catwalks

If the recent London and Paris Spring 2016 Fashion Shows were not enough, brides across the world enjoyed an extra dose of inspiration from the designs paraded down the catwalks of New York’s Bridal Fashion Week, which took place earlier this month.

From Oscar de la Renta to Vera Wang, top fashion labels from across the world seized the opportunity to showcase their stunning new bridal designs, many of which broke away from traditional idea of a white wedding gown. Plenty of fresh new trends were exhibited, with an array of styles on display to suit every kind of bride.

Among the most popular designs on the catwalk were elegant column style gowns featuring trains. Sheath gowns with floaty tulle trains caused a flutter of excitement amongst audiences at Naeem Khan, Carolina Herrera and Badgley Mischka shows. Meanwhile, voluminous princess style gowns also featured prominently, particularly in the collections of Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier. Layers of Cinderella-inspired tulle gave these frocks plenty of swish and a glamourous, royal edge.

Floral patterns, prints and embellishments also embellished the shows with 3D embellishments including layers of pretty floral leaves and elegantly trailing vines, and designers oscillating between dainty additions and bolder details to cater for more daring brides. Striking floral prints were also seen at the unveiling of Elizabeth Filmore, Austin Scarlett and Carolina Herrera’s collections where graphic water colours and soft, delicate prints all made the cut.

There was also plenty on offer to please brides in the mood to break away from the conventional white wedding gown. Chic trousers and jumpsuits were everywhere, with crisp tailoring giving these outfits a stunning flourish for the more contemporary bride. A number of designers hinted that these kinds of outfits are growing in popularity for civil ceremonies and that this is their way of supporting marriage equality in the LGBT community.

Gothic glamour was another of the most prominent trends on display, with designers including Vera Wang and Claire Pettibone showcasing dreamy charcoal and monochrome creations. Soft shades of nude, blush, taupe and beige appeared to be part of the designers’ essential colour palette, offering plenty of choice for the modern bride searching for a more unconventional gown.

Last but not least, beach brides getting married in exotic locations like Thailand will be pleased to learn that cropped, above-the-knee gowns still hold sway in the world of bridal glamour. A number of fun cocktail dresses and graceful tea-length styles were on display in New York, ideal for the bride who wants to splash around in the sea following her wedding ceremony.
