Destination Weddings Suit LGBT Couples

Thailand’s array of private villas is, without doubt, the jewel in the Kingdom’s crown when it comes to destination weddings. However, with an increasing number of couples tying the knot in Thailand, the Kingdom’s flexibility and open-mindedness when it comes to marriage is also another factor that makes it appeal as a top destination for wedding ceremonies.

Earlier this year, the Kingdom made headlines when three young men said their vows in Uthai Thani Province. Joke, 29, Bell, 21, and Art, 26, got married on Valentine’s Day in what has been hailed as the world’s first three-way gay wedding. The trio have become the subject of a great deal of media attention due to their ground-breaking choice.

"i think we are first three-way same-sex males to have a wedding – possibly in the world," Bell told the media. "Some people may not agree and are probably amazed by our decision, but we believe many people do understand and accept our choice. Love is love, after all."

The symbolic Buddhist ceremony chosen by Joke, Bell and Art reflects Thailand’s open mindedness and tolerance of LGBT rights. For couples planning a wedding in Thailand, such awareness of individual rights is surely one of the prime attractions. Indeed, the option to have a less traditional wedding was named as one of the top ten reasons why more British people are choosing to get married abroad, according to a survey by Loveholidays.com. Feedback from the survey suggested that hosting a wedding abroad offers a world of possibilities that tie into other cultures and traditions.

"When our research showed that one in ten people are now heading abroad to get married, we instantly wanted to know what was influencing that decision," Matthew Lawson, e-commerce director at loveholidays.com explained to the press. “We were surprised to find that budget wasn’t a leading factor, which implies that it’s still all about the wedding, sentimental vales, and who you share your big day with that really counts.”

For Joke, Bell and Art, breaking away from tradition was clearly an important step, and one that has drawn much media attention. However, for LGBT couples in search of a bit more privacy for their ceremonies, one of the Kingdom’s private villas is the perfect choice.

Rather than opting for a villa in the centre of the action, couples can choose a more remote beachside or mountaintop property featuring stunning ocean views. Few options could be more attractive to a couple (or trio) that values their privacy and independence.
